Radamel Falcao is willing to take a massive pay cut to join Chelsea.
Mirror Sport revealed in March the Colombian wants to stay in the Premier League and ideally wants a club in London.
Falcao’s representatives have already sounded out Chelsea after Manchester United decided not to take up the option to sign him permanently.
They have made it clear they are willing to scale back his huge £265,000-a-week wages from his parent club Monaco if it makes a deal happen.
Arsenal were keen last August but have seen him flop at Old Trafford while Tottenham are likely to baulk at the finances involved. Valencia and Liverpool have also shown an interest.
But Chelsea are looking for top quality back-up and competition for Diego Costa and Loic Remy after Didier Drogba announced he was leaving.
Falcao, 29, has struggled to recover his best form since the knee injury which forced him to miss last year’s World Cup.
But Falcao’s representatives - led by super agent Jorge Mendes - have close ties with Chelsea and could try to make the deal happen.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Colombian midfielder Juan Cuadrado could be a doubt for next month’s Copa America tournament.
Cuadrado injured a knee and hobbled off against Sunderland and today was waiting on the verdicts of a specialist - but was still complaining of pain from his knee.
